New Jersey Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg spent years pushing ethics reforms at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, helping expose the Bridgegate scandal in the process.

But now, Caren Turner, whom Weinberg championed to become a commissioner on the powerful bi-state agency, has been forced to resign her position in disgrace after flashing her Port Authority badge to Tenafly, N.J., police during a traffic stop that involved her daughter, then berating and cursing at the officers .

It’s an uncomfortable turn of events for Weinberg, a Democrat from Bergen County who’s now facing criticism from one of her Republican colleagues — made worse by the fact Turner led the agency’s ethics committee.

“I think what Caren Turner did was at best stupid and boneheaded, completely inappropriate, and her resignation from the Port Authority speaks for itself,” Weinberg said in a phone interview. “[It’s] somebody else’s behavior over which I obviously had no control, but it doesn’t mean that I’m not embarrassed by it. Of course I am.”

Turner was nominated for commissioner by then-New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as part of a deal that installed Christie’s ally, former New Jersey state Sen. Kevin O’Toole, onto the board. Turner, who according to her lobbying firm’s online bio, sat on the campaign finance committees for Hillary Clinton, former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) — was the Democratic piece of the deal, suggested by Weinberg.

“She understood government. She had her own government affairs agency in Washington D.C., so she understood the federal bureaucracy pretty well. She had a background in business,” Weinberg said. “And she had a couple of the parameters I was looking for: She was a women from Bergen County."

Turner’s conduct during last month’s traffic stop stands in contrast to an op-ed piece she wrote for the HuffPost in 2011, when she accused Christie of being a "misogynistic bully."

“We have spotted your bullying and we are also reporting it. There is no room in Washington for this thug-like behavior,” Turner wrote.

Weinberg had declined to comment in detail about Turner’s resignation before the video surfaced on Tuesday, leading to criticism from one of her Republican colleagues, state Sen. Anthony Bucco.

“In the past, she has never hesitated to speak out against ethics violations. She can’t have it both ways when it’s her recommendation, her nominee,” Bucco said in a statement Tuesday.

Description

This anime-illustrated detailed guidebook helps teens and young adults with social thinking as they sail the stormy seas of dating, texting, lies everyday relationships. ‪Parents‬, ‪educators‬, ‪‎therapists‬ will benefit from this guidebook as well and consider it a valuable resource to help young adults navigate social interactions.

New in the 2011 Edition

Why this Book is a "Breakthrough"

The anime-illustrated guidebook is written in the language of teens, as a “get real” discussion about what really goes on inside the minds of people when we share space together. Adults also use the book to use with students and to learn about and help discuss and unravel the social-emotional world of the students we're working with.

Many practical strategies help the reader figure out what impression they are making on others, how this affects their own emotions and what they could work on to make living in the increasingly complex social world more personally rewarding. Who doesn’t think they could improve in these skills and improve their casual to more complex relationships?

From discussing the “ins and outs” of what it means to be a “Social Thinker” and use related social skills, to figuring out texting, dating, the many different levels of friendship and the many and varied emotions we experience as we relate to others, the authors describe the real world of being with other people. This includes knowing how to sometimes just "fake it” better! The authors are not trying to get every reader to find a group to hang out with; instead, they are providing information to help each person find his or her place and be appreciated by others at whatever level he or she feels comfortable with.

Parents, teachers, counselors, other caregivers and even siblings may also find this book compelling, as it provides some “ah ha” moments that encourage a deeper discussion with these older kids about the social world. While we all work on improving our communication skills, few of us know how to talk about the social mind and how to cope in our very social world of the classroom, hanging out, holding a job, chatting on the Internet, texting and whatever the future holds.

One of the most important centers of European art in the Caribbean, the Museo de Arte de Ponce is one of Puerto Rico’s most renowned cultural treasures. Among the artists on display here are Roy Lichtenstein, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones and Lord Frederic Leighton, to name just a few. The museum is ingeniously designed not by period or style, but rather by a “point and counterpoint” philosophy that combines works that present contrasting viewpoints of a common theme or subject.

Parque de Bombas Museum

The most whimsical building in Ponce is a red-and-black Moorish fire station located in Plaza Las Delicias. Built in 1882, the striking Parque de Bombas was the city’s primary fire station for over a century. In 1990, it was decommissioned and converted into a museum commemorating the history of Ponce’s firefighters.
